Veneers

Modernise your natural grin with the addition of porcelain or composite veneers. Using a very thin custom-made shell over the front of the tooth, veneers are designed to cover the natural tooth surface and boost the visual appearance. The veneer is crafted out of porcelain or composite resin materials which are cemented over the tooth after removing a layer of your natural enamel.

Why would I want Veneers?

You may be finding that the more you look at your reflection, the less appealing your grin is to you. If this is a problem for you, it’s important to consider veneers as an option because at Family Dental Clinic – West End, we understand that there really is nothing worse than feeling insecure about your number one visual expression of your personality. Various reasons for changes in the look of your teeth may include:

  • Irreversible staining from smoking, tea, coffee and numerous other foods
  • Irregularities such as shortened, crooked, gapped or misshaped teeth
  • Trauma outcomes resulting in cracks or chips
  • Deteriorated fillings or other previous treatments that may need restoration

Why is it important for crack tooth syndrome to be treated?

As the crack in the tooth develops, it will expose the layer of tooth below the enamel called the dentine. This layer protects the small nerves known as the pulp. As more pressure is exerted against the tooth, the crack opens and causes the fluid to move. As the biting pressure is released, the crack pushes closed and the nerve is stimulated to cause pain.

The Procedure:

If you choose to go with porcelain veneers – the model will be forwarded to a laboratory where an exclusive set of porcelain shells are fabricated to suit your natural teeth. If you choose to go with composite veneers – your replacements can be set in a single appointment.

Before placing the veneer, your dentist will remove a small amount of your tooth. This way there’s enough room to fit the veneer over the front of the tooth without any noticeable bulking added to the front of your teeth.

Once your dentist is satisfied with the amount of enamel removed, the veneers well be set over the teeth to replace the removed layer.

Veneers take on a natural look and can even resist staining. They effortlessly enhance the beauty and shine of your teeth, often wholly improving the shape of your smile and in turn offer a boost for your self-esteem and confidence. Frequently Asked Questions

What are veneers?

Veneers are thin shells, usually made of porcelain or composite resin, that are custom-made to fit over the front surface of a tooth. They are used to improve the appearance of teeth by changing their colour, shape, size, or length. Veneers are bonded to the front of the teeth, and they can be a solution for teeth that are discoloured, worn down, chipped, misaligned, uneven, or irregularly shaped. Veneers are a popular cosmetic dentistry option because they can provide a natural-looking and long-lasting improvement to the appearance of teeth.

What are the differences between porcelain and composite veneers?

Porcelain veneers are thin shells made of dental ceramic that are custom-fabricated in a laboratory to match the colour and shape of natural teeth, offering durability and resistance to stains. They require two visits for placement, with temporary veneers placed initially. In contrast, composite veneers are made of a tooth-coloured resin material applied directly to the tooth and shaped by the dentist in a single visit, making them more affordable but less durable, typically needing replacement every 5-7 years. Porcelain veneers provide a more natural appearance, closely mimicking the translucency and shine of natural teeth, while composite veneers may not be as translucent or natural-looking but still offer a significant improvement in tooth aesthetics.

How long do veneers last?

Veneers can last for many years, but their lifespan can vary depending on several factors, including the type of material used (porcelain or composite), oral hygiene practices, and the amount of wear and tear they are exposed to. Porcelain veneers are more durable and can last 10–15 years or more with proper care, while composite veneers may need to be replaced every 5–7 years. Regular dental check-ups and cleanings, along with good oral hygiene habits, can help extend the lifespan of veneers.
