Dry Socket Symptoms: What to Watch For After an Extraction

Most extractions heal without any trouble, and knowing the early signs of a problem helps you act quickly if one does appear. Whether you have had a simple extraction or wisdom teeth removal, the first few days of aftercare shape how smoothly the socket heals. At Family Dental Clinic West End, our team sees patients from across West End and South Brisbane, and dry socket is one of the questions we are asked most often after treatment.

What Dry Socket Actually Is

After a tooth is removed, a blood clot forms in the socket to protect the bone and nerve endings underneath. Dry socket happens when that clot is lost or breaks down too early, leaving the bone exposed. It is one of the more common dental emergencies we see after an extraction, particularly following the removal of lower wisdom teeth.

It usually appears three to five days after the extraction, which is what separates it from the ordinary soreness of the first day or two.

Dry Socket Symptoms to Look Out For

Normal discomfort peaks around day two or three and then eases. Dry socket tends to do the opposite. Signs worth ringing us about include:

  • Pain that worsens from day three rather than settling
  • A deep ache spreading towards the ear, temple or neck
  • An empty looking socket with visible bone
  • A bad taste or noticeable bad breath
  • Pain relief that no longer controls the discomfort

If you can see a dark clot in the socket and the pain is gradually improving, healing is usually on track.

How to Lower Your Risk

Most of what prevents dry socket happens in the first 24 hours. Avoid rinsing, spitting and drinking through a straw on the first day, since the suction can lift the clot out. Leave the area alone rather than checking it with your tongue, and stick to soft, cool food.

Smoking is the biggest single risk factor, both from the suction and from its effect on healing, so stopping for as long as you can around your appointment makes a real difference. From the second day, gentle warm salt water rinses help keep the socket clean.

Other factors that raise the risk include a difficult or surgical extraction, a previous episode of dry socket and some hormonal medications, so let us know about any of these before your appointment and we can plan your aftercare with that in mind.
